The Greatest Story Ever Told

- a friend I haven’t seen since high school recently asked me how Adam and I met
- 2 weeks ago today, Adam shaved his head and he looks exactly like he did when we first met
- the first category idea I had for my site was one called ABC IV

We met:

Walking to work. We walked past one another at least two to four days out of each week for a while, a couple months at least. On my end, I had nicknamed him ‘morning walk by crush’. In my morning emails to my friends etc., I would always mention whether I had seen ‘morning walk by crush’ or not.

Timing it to try and walk by him was hard; sometimes I would have to walk super slow, ridiculously slow. Turns out, he was getting to the work site and talking about me to his work buddies and also trying to time it right so he could walk by me as well. He was looking forward to ‘the walk by’ just as much as I was. One of the funny things was; the very first morning we walked by each other our eyes met and he offered me a little smile, but I looked away. The next morning I tried to meet eyes with him and smile but he looked away. Because of this, we walked by each other, trying to act all tough and non affected for what felt like forever.

I was strutting it hard, it was difficult to dress for work, let me tell you. It totally sucked not even knowing whether I would walk by him or not ! Thankfully, fate stepped in. I didn’t know it at the time, but he only worked until 3:00pm or 3:30 each day and he pretty much never worked over time. I worked until 4:30 each day and being a receptionist, I also, pretty much never worked over time. On this particular day, I had an issue with our courier company and I was on the phone with them until close to 5:00. I was almost to the corner of the first street I would cross on my walk home when I noticed ‘morning walk by crush’ crossing to head up the same way he would come from in the mornings. (he had not seen me) I instantly changed course and huffed it up behind him. I had already noticed on morning walk bys that his hard hat said ’spanky’. At the time I really wasn’t sure what to think of that. As I walked by him I had no idea what to say but I knew I HAD to say something……anything. So I swept past him and said something incredibly blonde and stupid like: nice, your hat says ’spanky’…no worries, I have a friend whose nickname is 2-dirty. That was that, I was past him, I didn’t look back. I had to concentrate on my walk and not falling over. I remember totally laughing at myself and repeating ‘hat’ like as if I don’t know it is called a hard hat. This opened up the door to acknowledging each other on the ‘morning walk by’. We would now smile and I looked forward to walking by him even more.

The one thing I know about construction in Vancouver is that the men on the job sites change fast as each part of the building goes up and in. I had no idea what kind of construction he was doing. All I knew came via the construction worker outfit he wore each day and the hard hat was I guess a dead give away. I had booked a couple days off work for something I don’t remember what. I had three weeks of vacation that year but didn’t make enough money to go anywhere so I just took a lot of random time off. The first two days I was back walking to work I did not walk by him. That made it four work days I had not seen him !! I allowed myself to feel stressed that maybe he was done at his ’site’ and it just happened to coincide with the two whole days I had taken off….just my luck, seriously ! BUT alas we walked past each other the next morning, it was a Wednesday. After we had gotten about ten paces past one another we caught one another doing the ‘look back’, we laughed at each other, turned back to course and kept walking. I think I had a smile on my face the whole day. Some of the ladies I worked with were totally kept up to date on the ‘morning walk by crush’ progress and this encounter was a definite story the second I walked into the office.

The next morning, I waited at the corner; I could see him coming down the street. We both had very large smiles on our faces, we introduced ourselves, he asked me out, he gave me his number and I called him that weekend. His roommate did not give him the message. Oddly, I wasn’t worried. Normally I would have been a little worried, felt played; possibly offended that someone had not returned my call. Thankfully we walked by each other on the Monday and he asked if I had called I said yes, he said his roommate sucked and asked for my number. That day I got off at my normal 4:30 and about half way through my walk home my phone rang and it was Adam. Our first date was September 30th 2003, we have been together ever since.

Our first photo taken together.

i am glad that i look weird on fotos. i am always concentrating the big bag of my resources toward my transcension from humble death-racer to enigma, and gods never look right in art, do they?? immortality is totally attainable, you just have to sell. when i hear people say “i heard you were dead” i know i want into the legend. mountains cant play cards or eat taffy, but they sure as hell get talked about and are walked a r o u n d. Why do they bother on csi? fotos dont prove anything.

sorry bout that last comment… i have been trained to display epileptic symptoms when properly prompted. i love that damn story. its almost cheezy enough to have been written. i love the awkwardness of it all. i had been socially rejected and was on the rise from el guttero when you showed up, working at shitty melon and fixin to hunker down. ill say it till i die then itll be written on my tomb: 80percent of life is timing. badda bing, badda boom, buttafuoco.
