Okay so where does a swimmer start......first by saying thanks for recognizing a 'true' sport and second by saying that Ian held out on that retirement statement until about a year ago, so don't feel bad.
As for why he retired, well I have some not so nice reasonings behind that, even though he is still one of my personal favs. (probably because he is down right sexy) But I truely thing a little of the not so favorable additives were part of his regime and was getting too close to being 'caught'. I know not nice to say but I think it's true.
As for Phelps, he's is the real deal. He has put swimming back on the map for the world and yes I think he we blow away Spitz' record this year. Although no pressure makes for better results.
Lets not forget our Canadian boys. Brian Johns and Brent Hayden to name a few quickly. They have been representing very well lately and this could be a turn around year for us. (Girls too)
So I'll leave it there and thanks again for the great post.
Oh and lest we forget the great Victor Davis (my personal all-time fav), Mark Tweksbury, Alex 'Sasha' Baumann!!!!!

What sort of fan are you for not knowing Ian Thorpe had retired? The perfectly reasonable sort, who assumed he was far too young to think about packing it in, which he was.
