Canstruction Vancouver

This morning we got up relatively early met up with Paul and friend at the *brand new* Vancouver Convention Center to take in what is said to be “a most unusual Sculpture Competition.”

Canstruction Vancouver.

Canstruction an event in its 7th year supporting the Greater Vancouver Food Bank Society each year gathers teams to compete in designing and building the most colossal sculpture possible out of canned food. I hadn’t heard of this competition before and sculptures, museums, and exhibits such as Krazy at the Vancouver Art Gallery last year are right up our alley.

there was lots of tuna.

Canstruction Vancouver, the local chapter of an anti-hunger project created by Society of Design Administration, is held in over 100 cities across North America, including 12 in Canada; and

Over 750,000 cans of food – much of it high quality protein – have been donated to the Greater Vancouver Food Bank Society through Canstruction Vancouver.

Entrance is by donation, even if your change purse is tight and can only spare a Loonie or Toonie for every dollar Canstruction donates to the Foodbank this allows the Foodbank to purchase $3 dollars worth of food for its clients.

Let’s Get Physical!!!

bodysuit. Around Christmas time I needed some red tights and I went to American Apparel and I had an issue, I came home I mentioned it on the good ol’ Twitter machine and BAM. Emails. I felt so important. They were on it pretty fast.  Problem with the internet is that sometimes things happen too fast and I ended up with two people trying to help me and two different but very tantalizing offers to handle the issues with apologies included of course.  I could have been an asshole and collected off both offers, too bad I’m an honest little member of society and I brought both offers to the attention of the person I deemed by the emails was the higher up of the two and attempted to negotiate.  So I would just like it clear that I did not just nab a free bodysuit, don’t go off yelling foul service GIVE ME A FREE BODY SUIT NOW or anything I used my own math skills and discovered that even though there had a been an error made in two people contacting me being honest about it was cheaper for them because I was all well instead of taking this and this and then taking this percent off of whatever how about I just go with this here bodysuit.

What happened next is what happens to every person who gets a bodysuit; you end up listening to Olivia Newton John and dancing around your apartment to Physical. Oh right I am pretty out of my mind right now and going through a seriously serious family crisis, it’s just me.  So I ended up taking some photos, Adam liked said photos, that was Friday.

Yesterday I ended up playing my Blip.fm list which now contains Physical and decided to do a play by play of how I ended up in the bodysuit the day before. But by this time Adam had put the Physical video on YouTube and I was reminded that there are headbands worn in the original so I made sure to include them in mine as well.

The THIRD Quarter Equals Twenty-Five

I was tagged with the 25 things meme by Kimli and this made me happy because I started the whole hundred things about me stuff years ago so long ago 1-25 ALMOST got eaten by cyber space itself, long story short I only ever made it to 50 and I named them quarters because I am super fucking original. Well, seeing as I’m also a smart [ass] I figured HEY MAN why not turn this 25 things about me meme into my THIRD quarter. I know right, this is where you insert the word – genius.

Without further ado, 25 things about me numbered from 51 to 75:

  1. I like abrasive soaps I could exfoliate my epidermis off
  2. I try to read at least two books a month
  3. I’m obsessive about how many glasses of water I have to drink each day before my pee is clear
  4. I fucking hate cork wedge heels
  5. My favourite numbers are 7 and 14
  6. I have loved Tori Spelling since the 90′s and can not wait for her next book
  7. I have always eaten my cereal with a big spoon
  8. I prefer a thicker eyebrow
  9. I love hearing that I am funny over any compliment even over being told that my unicorn socks are cool
  10. I talk to and about myself in the third person on a semi regular basis
  11. Just because I am not having babies does not mean I don’t like your drooling screaming poop machines in fact I love them even more now
  12. I have serious problems with mugs specifically designed for right handed people fuck you and your no image on the back of the mug I pick up with my LEFT hand you JUST LOST A SALE ASSHOLE
  13. I pretty much find every single piece of factual information on everything to do with the history of being left handed to be some of the most fascinating shit on earth
  14. Since I was a young hellion I have always grown my hair out only to cut it so short I have been mistaken for a boy when asking for a bathroom key in a gas station, I also shaved my head once some of you know that though but my point is except when I go through phases where I have bangs I never leave my hair long for long
  15. My gag reflex is such that I choke on water
  16. I love Bobby Darin’s When a Man Answers because I grew up on a party line when we lived in Smithers
  17. I am obsessive about the organization of my books. For the most part they are kept in alphabetical order by author
  18. I know the proper phonetic alphabet and also speak good phonetically
  19. My name is actually Charlie Alpha Charlie
  20. I thought I would love Sony for life but I am officially an Xbox girl
  21. I honestly believe that the worst on screen camera kiss of all time is when Sylar first kisses Elle from Heroes episode Villains 1 of 2, Season Three
  22. When I saw Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell and Van Morrison perform at GM place in 1998 I was not what I’d call a fan of any of them I bought my ticket as a favour for a friend.  I still kick myself over that and the story makes Adam shake his head at me EVERY TIME
  23. I got my first [of only two ever] speeding tickets RIGHT in front of my high school as the lunch bell to return was going off so every one noticed and YES my x-boyfriend who I was in NO WAY over saw too
  24. I still miss that 1985 Honda Civic, it rusted out completely after about a week in Vancouver it was a Northern car at its heart and I sold it to a wrecker for four hundred dollars
  25. I love having things professionally framed

an evening with kk+

I think that when anyone starts to blog there are people that we each admire from afar, hoping that some day we’ll run into them or maybe even get to meet them.  In early 2005 when I started my blog I kept hearing the name Kris Krüg also know as kk, to this day I still can’t pin point exactly what it was about him but I became a giddy geeky little fan.

Kris is a very well known Vancouver photographer; he takes shit loads of photos of awesome stuff and awesome people, some of his photos will be appearing in the new season of Project Runway Canada, and speaking of runways, just name a runway, Kris has probably been at the end of it gettin’ his shot.  Just today a shot of his of Pete Doherty was used by Pitch Fork Media in an article on Pete’s new album. And let us not forget he also helps spearhead Canada’s largest social media conference, Northern Voice and also now finds himself as one of the top male social media pundits in the country – did I mention he is actually American? Pretty impressive stuff if you ask me.   But what I love the absolute MOST and find truly exciting is how involved Kris is with the Olympics, the up coming ones here in 2010, Beijing, China AND he was in Torino, Italy.

It actually took me a while to realize that this Flickr home page photo was his but over the years whenever I’d pull up Flickr and the photo would come up I’d keep thinking to myself, someday, someday I’m going to meet this guy.

Kris and I do run in a couple of the same circles and through Facebook I noticed that we were being invited to some of the same parties, most notably a party last February where we were both down as GOING and I thought THIS IS IT I’M finally going to meet him and I dressed extra special and he didn’t show. A couple of weeks after that Northern Voice was set to start with the yearly opening party but I social anxietied out and couldn’t go but I sent Adam in my place with STRICT instructions that if he met ANYONE to please please pretty please meet Kris for me.  As luck would have it Adam found himself outside side smoking right next to Mr. Krüg and my husband got to meet him.  I made Adam fill me in on every detail, drilled him like a Hilti.

Late last year my name came up in conversation somewhere and I found myself invited to be his Flickr pal, well of course I will be your Flickr pal Kris! I sent him an email over Flickr basically stating I’d been following his work for years and was pissed off that we kept missing each other at parties, he mailed something cheeky back and we started an online friendship, next came Twitter, then came Facebook and THEN came the 604 awards where I finally had the pleasure of meeting him and for me this was enough, we’d already reached the point of here’s my number let me know if you are in the area kinda thing so I was content, I’d met someone I’d admired for years, I was good.

I heard a rumor that he wanted to take my photo, I was in Ontario at the time and I literally started jumping all over the room. I’m sure Rhonda will remember. But I didn’t know that it was 100% true until arriving home from therapy the night following the 604 awards to an email that said ‘whatcha doing I want to take your photo’.

FUCK FUCK FUCK. I couldn’t go over, therapy nights are my nights, I’m over stimulated, figuring shit out, I couldn’t go have my photo taken BUT at least I knew it was true that he did want to take my photo so I did another happy dance and just hoped like hell it would come up again. [i try not to get too excited about things until they actually happen]

Thanks to what Twitter has called the Shorty Awards it did come up again. [if you are on Twitter you know how this works if you aren't please bear with me a sec] Kris has made the finals in the photography category and when you vote it looks something like this: @shortyawards I vote for @kk in the Shorty Awards Finals for #photography because…,  for my because I put ‘because he says he wants to take my photo’ I soon received an email and it took us one more canceled date mostly because there were a few rare Vancouver snow days but last night we managed to hang and he took my photos.

I was nervous; seriously nervous here is someone I’m just getting to know as a friend, but was having my photo taken by and I have never in my life had these sorts of professional photos taken EVER.  Except for the parts where I attempted to act like a model I felt totally comfortable, minus what I think are normal nerves when you are someone who is still working on making eye contact when speaking to people let alone looking straight into a massive camera lens.

I am really happy that I was able to be myself, Kris and I had some great conversation, even totally nerdy stuff like he, myself and Adam all say sweedish instead of sweet, you know just stuff that made it easier to relax and I feel that these photos really show me and how I act when there isn’t a camera in front of me.  At first I was thinking I wanted to go all sexy, but that isn’t me, I’m casual, laid back, I don’t sip on gin but I do like juice. I think my very favourite thing about these photos is that I have nearly no make up on and none of these photos have been edited. When Adam came to pick me up i think Kris liked his hat so now Adam has some sweedish shots of his own as well and I personally think he looks pretty damn fine.

So with ALL that said before I go I need to ask you a favour, if you are on Twitter whether you are following me or not but you probably should be following me but whatever if you are reading this and you are on Twitter, Kris needs you and I’m asking you to please vote for him in the Shorty Awards I mentioned above, all you have to do is click this line of highlighted text and VOTE for @kk.

That about sums up a thank you for taking rad photos of Adam and myself me thinks.
